The Center for AI and Digital Policy (CAIDP), an ethics group focused on artificial intelligence, has requested that the Federal Trade Commission investigate OpenAI for violating consumer protection regulations. The group alleges that OpenAI’s release of AI text generation tools is “biased, deceptive, and a risk to public safety.” The complaint follows a recent open letter signed by CAIDP President Marc Rotenberg and others, including AI researchers and OpenAI co-founder Elon Musk, calling for a pause on large generative AI experiments and increased government oversight. CAIDP’s complaint specifically cites potential threats from OpenAI’s GPT-4 generative text model, such as the production of malicious code and highly tailored propaganda, as well as the risk of biased training data resulting in unfair hiring practices and baked-in stereotypes. The complaint also highlights privacy failures with OpenAI’s product interface, including a recent bug that exposed user histories and payment details.
